http://www.ipsf.com A shallow sandbed of 1/2-inch depth is added to our Nano Lagoon tank.

The sand is course grained aragonite (crushed coral) that has been washed with fresh water to remove the dust and fine particles.

The sandbed is smoothed by hand over the floor of the tank.

A shallow sandbed offers ample habitat for beneficial invertebrates while remaining aerobic and "alive."

Negative aspects of deep sandbeds are avoided. These include formation of anoxic or anaerobic "dead zones" and consequent production of hydrogen sulfide gas (leading to sulfuric acid formation and declining pH).

The shallow, aerobic sandbed is cheaper and easier to install than a deep sandbed. It achieves many functions essential to maintaining a healthy nano tank, including harboring beneficial bacteria and performing a buffering function as the aragonite sand slowly dissolves.

Please use only captive-bred organisms in your reef aquarium.
